While I’ve largely enjoyed any time I’ve dipped a toe into virtual reality, I definitely do not own a VR headset. As cool as the tech is, that hardware remains an expensive niche within the increasingly pricey PC gaming landscape.
Global VR headset shipments apparently declined by 18% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, according to the latest data from Counterpoint Research. That doesn’t surprise me—though it’s also not great news for Valve or the potentially imminent release of its Steam Frame VR headset.
A dearth of major game releases is one reason why VR headsets aren’t the most in-demand hardware. For instance, Valve’s Half-Life: Alyx remains an unsurpassed high bar six-years after release. Counterpoint Research also highlights that VR isn’t immune to the same pricing pressures as the rest of consumer hardware, citing Meta’s decision to raise the price Quest 3 and Quest 3S due to the memory supply crisis as adding “further pressure to an already cooling market.”

Interestingly though, VR appears to enjoy consistent demand from businesses. “Enterprises and governments are generally less price-sensitive than consumers when adopting VR’s digital twin and spatial computing capabilities to address operational challenges and enhance productivity,” Counterpoint Research says. “Meanwhile, driven by the continued development of the robotics industry, particularly in China, demand for VR headsets used for data collection and remote robot control is expected to grow this year.”
Contrastingly AR devices, like Meta’s smart glasses, have had an incredible year. “Global shipments of AR devices surged 138% [year-on-year] and 10% [quarter-on-quarter] in Q2 2026, driven by new product launches, international expansion by OEMs, and China’s 6.18 promotional campaigns.”
Meta is easily the largest player in this space outside of China, with a 54% share of the AR/VR OEM market in the second quarter of 2026. There’s definitely a lot I could say about the privacy concerns surrounding Meta’s smart glasses—not to mention the money pit that is Reality Labs—but allow me to start bringing things back to Valve.
As far as we’re concerned, the best VR headset overall is the Meta Quest 3, which will now set you back $600 at least. The best budget option, the Meta Quest 3S, now costs $350. Given the already mentioned RAMpocalypse, it will be impressive if Valve can offer its latest VR challenger at a price point that can compete. But given the pricing woes of the Steam Machine amid this here memory supply crisis, that could be a struggle.
Given that recent data mining suggests that, rather than making a debut with something new, the aforementioned six-year-old game might be the key launch offering instead, I’m a little unsure about Valve’s footing. If you’re already all-in on VR, then you’ve likely already got the hardware and you already loved Half-Life: Alyx when it first came out—but is the Steam Frame keeping a trick up its sleeve to justify Valve re-entering the ‘cooling’ VR market? Time will tell.
