The WD SN850P was made specifically for the PS5 console. That means it fulfills all of Sony’s requirements, like a minimum read speed of 5,500MB/s, a PCI-Express Gen4x4 interface, and a slim yet effective heatsink that fits within the confines of the PS5 bay. It’s officially licensed by Sony which means WD paid to have the PS5 logo gloriously emblazoned on its stick. No, you’ll never see it once it’s installed and no, it won’t make your PS5 any more special, but it’s there.
Of course the SN850P is also a great option as a boot drive for your gaming PC. It’s one of the faster PCI-E Gen4 SSDs on the market with transfer speeds of up to 7,300MB/s read and 6,600MB/s write. The SN850P also has a dedicated LDDR4 DRAM cache. Pretty much every other SSD at this price point is DRAM-less and relies on HMB, or system memory, as a less expensive alternative. It doesn’t make much of a difference in a PS5 console but PC users might notice it.
The built-in heatsink means you don’t have to go out and buy one and install it yourself, even though it’s not that hard and not too expensive to do so. There are a few other SSD drives at a similar price, but most of them are from brands that you’ve probably never heard of.
