RTX 5080 gaming laptop deals haven’t been looking too healthy as of late. The high-end rigs have taken the year’s component shortages hard, with MSRPs scaling up the price ladder and the regular sale prices we’d grown accustomed to disappearing from the shelves. HP seems to have a surplus of older HP Omen Max machines in its warehouse this week, though.
The RTX 5080 configuration of the best gaming laptop I’ve tested has taken a tumble all the way down to $2,299.99 (was $3,799.99) in a sale that makes me feel a year younger already. There was a time when these machines settled at between $2,000 and $2,500 when discounts were applied (depending on whether you opted for an OLED or IPS display), but prices have been stuck closer to $3,000 for a few months now.
This is last year’s model, the newer versions are branded as HyperX Omen Max, but it’s those 2025 releases that hold all the power right now. 2026 has seen RAM shortages pushing prices of new gaming laptops sky-high – RTX 5060 machines now cost RTX 5070 prices and even the new 12GB RTX 5070 models are going to have a tough time defending their rates. Stock of last year’s machines, however, has managed to fend off these increases a little longer. Yes, they’re seeing their own surges now that demand is starting to squeeze supplies a little tighter, but you’ll generally find better rates overall.
It’s handy, then, that the HP Omen Max 16 is actually a standout machine in its own right. I gave this rig 4.5/5 stars in my review last year, with only that particularly low battery life taking away from full marks. This isn’t one to cart around all day without access to a plug point, but if you’re happy keeping a charger (or USB-C) in your bag, you’re getting a fantastic design and excellent performance all in one.
The spec on offer above matches the laptop I had on my test bench exactly, with that high-end Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX processor supporting the full RTX 5080 experience. In testing, it beat the similarly specced Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 and even the RTX 5090 Razer Blade 16 across Time Spy and Fire Strike, only just nudging under the latter in Steel Nomad.
At full QHD+ resolution and in each game’s highest graphical setting, this 16-incher was pummelling lighter benchmarks like Shadow of the Tomb Raider (average 192fps) and Total War: Three Kingdoms (average 113fps), while keeping well above the 60fps baseline in Cyberpunk 2077’s RT:Ultra run (average 70fps).
In short, this is a slimline and stylish gaming laptop that doesn’t sacrifice performance for a more manageable form factor. That’s something even the Asus ROG Zephyrus G and Razer Blade lines can’t always match.
