PS3 Lord of the Rings Action RPG War in the North Suddenly Returns, Out Now on PS5

Out of nowhere, a remaster of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North has appeared on PS5.

The original game, an action RPG, released for the PS3 back in 2011. This is apparently the ‘Legacy Edition’.

Again, it’s available to purchase right now. It’s priced at $19.99 / £18.99 with a 10% launch discount if you’re a PS Plus subscriber.

So… is this thing worth buying? Honestly, I’d take a step back before grabbing it on impulse. War in the North is far from being a classic.

The PS3 version was met with very mixed reviews back in the day, with the Metacritic score rounding out at a 61.

While most reviewers praised the title’s authentic Lord of the Rings feel, there were complaints of repetitive gameplay, dull level design, and boring characters.

Basically, it’s a linear, hack and slash dungeon crawler with co-op functionality for up to three players (both online and via split screen). Although this re-release claims that the adventure is now “solo optimised”.

Personally, I’d wait and see how this revival holds up before splashing your cash. Check out some gameplay footage once it’s live, and see whether the original release’s bugs have been sorted out. They were apparently pretty bad.
