Double Fine get layoffs after split from Microsoft

Double Fine have announced that 23 members of their team have been let go, as they need to cut down on expenses to keep the studio alive. This follows their split from Microsoft / Xbox earlier in July.

As they posted on Bluesky:

“Today, Double Fine Productions let go of 23 members of its staff.

As a small, tightly knit team, these actions are not taken lightly. Only the survival of our studio would ever make us consider such a painful action. Our transition to becoming an independent company means becoming a size that we can sustain.

The people we are losing were all important. They all made an impact on our games and culture, and they will be missed.

We are committed to supporting each affected person as best as we can, and we thank them for their hard work and commitment to the creative spirit we cherish here at Double Fine.

-Tim”

Hopefully with Double Fine now being indie again, they can fully find their feet and come out with some more great games. Tough time for the industry though.

My thoughts go out to those let go, hopefully they will find new work quickly.
