Sonic Frontiers Surpasses 5 Million Copies Sold as Fans Await What Comes Next

SEGA has announced that Sonic Frontiers has now officially sold over 5 million copies.

The news came via social media yesterday:

To celebrate the sales milestone, the publisher has unlocked the Sonic Adventure 2 shoes for all players, so you can run around the Starfall Islands proper noughties style.

The game reached 2.5 million sales within its first month, so it’s taken about three years and eight months to double its total.

Initially launching in November 2022, Sonic Frontiers was met with a mixed reception, but it broke new ground for the hedgehog with open environments to explore and very different gameplay to previous 3D Sonic titles.

This formula was built upon in Sonic X Shadow Generations, with the latter character’s campaign improving on the foundations laid down by Frontiers.

This news comes at an interesting time for Sonic , last year saw the launch of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, and while that continues to receive ongoing post-launch DLC and support, fans are waiting patiently for the SEGA mascot’s next main game.

It’s been rumoured for a while that Sonic Frontiers 2 is in the works, which would make a lot of sense, though there’s also hope for remakes/remasters of some old favourites, such as the Sonic Adventure series.

Personally, I’m excited for Sonic Team to double down on Frontiers’ tech and design language. Especially following Shadow Generations, it seems the studio is heading in the right direction gameplay-wise with 3D Sonic after, in my opinion, many years of missteps.
