The idea of a potential all-digital future is still very much doing the rounds at the moment, with Sony confirming that it will be ceasing the production of PS5 discs from January 2028 (and if you thought it might reverse course, think again).
One company that doesn’t seem too fussed about such an eventuality is Capcom. During a Q&A session for its latest financial release, it was asked what kind of impact it anticipates from the shrinking physical media market. The answer? Basically no impact at all.
Q: What impact do you anticipate from the shrinking physical game market in the medium to long term?
A: Approximately 90% of our unit sales are digital. We do not anticipate a significant impact at this time.
90% is pretty wild, and if other major companies hypothetically quote similar figures, it’s easy to see why Sony would come to such a decision.
Nintendo, meanwhile, commands a much higher percentage of physical sales, though its digital footprint does seem to be increasing – albeit quite slowly. The latest data shows that 61.5% of sales during Q1 FY2027 were digital, while Q4 2026 was 67.2%. Numbers immediately prior to this were reasonably lower, as you’ll see in the below chart.

Capcom’s been having a pretty great year so far, with sales for both Resident Evil Requiem and Pragmata exceeding expectations. It also has Onimusha: Way of the Sword launching on 4th September 2026, while also kicking off Street Fighter 6‘s Year 4 content with the release of Yasmine.
