Update: It’s official – Spider-Man: Brand New Day had the biggest opening weekend of all time in the US, with final totals coming in at $360 million, just ahead of Avengers: Endgame’s $357 million (not adjusted for inflation). That puts the final total for the weekend at a staggering $932 million worldwide. Thwip!
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already swung into the record books. Not only has the fourth outing for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker had one of the biggest box office opening weekends of all time globally, it may yet top Avengers: Endgame as the biggest opening weekend of all time domestically, once final numbers are in.
Per Box Office Mojo, the Marvel Phase 6 movie opened to a staggering $927 million globally. To put that into perspective, box office sensation The Odyssey is sitting on $911 million globally after three weekends. That total is still some way behind Avengers: Endgame’s unfathomable $1.2 billion global opening weekend haul – a record that may never be beaten – but is almost $300 million ahead of the previous number two, Avengers: Infinity War, which opened to $640 million in 2018.

Even more impressive, arguably, is that Brand New Day is on the cusp of topping Avengers: Endgame’s all-time opening weekend record at the US box office. Current reports have Brand New Day at $355 million for the (long) weekend, some $2.1 million short of Avengers: Endgame’s $357.1 million. Brand New Day’s final total is almost certain to go up once final figures are accounted for, with some already suggesting it could come in at a record-setting $359 million.
Whichever way you swing it, Brand New Day has been a roaring success, and a much-needed win for both the beleaguered Marvel Studios and distributor Sony, whose Spider-Man extended universe was quietly shelved ahead of a planned reboot earlier this year. Perhaps they should have accelerated those plans to merge the two universes.
Brand New Day has also been a big hit with audiences and critics. Our own Spider-Man: Brand New Day review calls it: “Marvel Studios’ strongest standalone outing since Avengers: Endgame.” The movie is currently sitting on a very respectable 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. The question now is: where does Spider-Man go from here? The Spider-Man: Brand New Day post-credits scene may offer a few clues on that front.
